The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine was an association established at Rome in 1562 for the purpose of providing religious education. Today, Vatican officials consider attendance at a school of religious education to be vital to children’s development as Catholics.
Also known as CCD, the Saint James School of Religion offers sacramental preparation and religious education for the children of Saint James Parish, Kindergarten through grade eight, who attend secular schools. It supports parents in their responsibility to develop their children’s faith by giving students the opportunity to learn prayers and the Catholic catechism. Students also enter the fold of the parish community by participating in service projects and becoming better acquainted with the mission of Saint James Church.
Religious education teachers are volunteers from the parish who make a personal commitment to serve as catechists for the children. The Diocese of Metuchen offers workshops and training classes. Occasionally, teachers have the opportunity to participate in meetings and workshops here at Saint James.
Saint James catechists are an integral part of the Saint James School of Religious Education, which enrolls more than 1200 students each year. Volunteer teachers and aides are always welcome and needed.
Classes meet weekly from September through April on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday at Saint James School.
The School of Religious Education also offers Vacation Bible School. The program is intended for children, entering Kindergarten through grade five. Grade level teachers, music teachers, assistants and kitchen helpers are needed. Teens looking for service hours are also welcome.

What we have seen and heard we proclaim now to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; for our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing this so that our joy may be complete. — 1 John 1:1-4
